The ACOG scope mostly works like any other scope, using a system of lenses to magnify the target and to superimpose a reticle (aiming mark) on it. Like many other scopes, the ACOG reticle is illuminated to make it more visible.

The important difference is that ACOG uses a fiber optic light gathering device (with some newer models using tritium light sources) to illuminate the reticle. This makes it free of batteries and electrical connections that may fail. It also has a minimum of controls.
