Shakira's mother, Nidia del Carmen Ripoll Torrado, worked as a homemaker and was also a part-time jewelry designer. She played a significant role in nurturing Shakira's artistic talents from a young age. Her support and encouragement helped shape Shakira's musical career.
Shakira's inspiration was her father; he wrote poetry on a typewriter. She was fascinated by this when she was very young. She wrote her first poem when she was four. These poems turned into songs and her first CD came out when she was 13. When her father went bankrupt, and they had to sell most of their things, Shakira felt as if the world was coming to an end so her father took her to an orphanage to see their lives (she grew up in Columbia so they definitely weren't good.) She was so deeply effected by these children she now helps children all around the world.

The role of women changed significantly in the 1920s. The 19th Amendment to the US Constitution gave women the opportunity to vote and take a more proactive role in politics. Women were allowed to attend colleges and universities throughout the country. More women were working outside of the home as well during this time.
