Well, the Baroque Period (1600-1750) was a period when composers often wrote music with each hand playing its own melody, or "voice". This style of writing is called polyphonic.

The Classical Period (1750-1825) was a period when composers wrote with the right hand playing a melody while the left hand playing an accompaniment. This style of writing is called homophonic.

The Romantic Period (1825-1900) was a period when composers wrote long, beautiful melodies and complicated accompaniments that rely on the use of the pedal of the piano. The waltz became a popular dance music type that replaced the minuet from the Classical Period.

The 20th Century (1900-2000) was a period with many music styles. The composers typically experimented with unusual harmonies, scales and rhythms to give their music a distinctly different sound than music of earlier periods.
