In the Baroque era the concerto had not been formalized as it would become with Haydn and Mozart. The sonata form had not been invented yet. Typically it was in three movements, as it would continue to be, but the solo part was more intricately woven with the accompanying ensemble. The two outer movements were fast, and the middle was slow, usually a long drawn melody from the soloist with bare accompaniment, sometimes short, sometimes little more than a few chords. Bach's Brandenburg Concertos and all of Vivaldi's concerti, including The Four Seasons, followed this arrangement.
