The sitar is played by strumming or plucking its stings with a wire "pick" called a mizrab.

Getting into detail, you hold the instrument while sitting with your legs crossed. You ballance the main tumba (body) between your foot and your knee. When playing, you usually strum with a "pulse" or raga. This pulse is continuous and allows the sympathetic or resonating strings to constantly play. A note is played by positioning your finger on one of the curved frets and strumming the string your finger is pressing. The curvature of the frets allows the sitarist to pull the strings downward making a unique effect.
