Mike even quit Dream Theatre in anticipation of joining A7X, despite it never being the plan. Unfortunately, relations between Mike and the band are taut as Mike had assumed too much too soon. Avenged Sevenfold wanted a drummer who was virtually unheard of so they could become a member of 'A7X' as a whole... whereas, they felt that if Mike had stayed, it would have forever been 'Avenged Sevenfold with Mike Portnoy' as he was already established.Since January 2011, the band have been working with former Confide drummer, Arin Ilejay. There is no current confirmation as to whether he will become an official/permanent member, however it is thought he will be as the band have expressed severe interest in keeping him.
