They were put together as a band at the boot camp stage of The X Factor after failing to make the next stage as solo singers. They were formed July 23rd 2010 at 8:22 pm.

whoever wrote that^^^^^ is WRONG! One Direction started off as Harry, Liam, Niall, Zayn, and Louis auditioning as solo acts on Britains's Got Talent in 2010 but the judges decided they werent strong enough solo so they joined them together as a band on July 23 at 8:22 2010
