Short answer: 7

To answer the Cb question more completely I'd like to begin by first defining the appearance of the flat, how it looks when written, how it typically looks on the piano

(keyboard) and where it is placed. Then explain what it is actually, it's function and meaning.

When written, a flat is a lowercase b which is super-scripted and moved upward to look like this:(b). That's what a flat looks like when written.

The regular lowercase is this: (b)

Super-scripted lowercase is this: (b)

As you can see the super-script letter is smaller in size and raised upwards.

Now then, when writing, we always place the super-scripted (b) letter to the right of any other regular letter on the piano (keyboard) such as the letter C for example to give us this look (Cb) as a posed to this look: (Cb). See the difference.

If you did not have a super-script, then we would accept Cb as Okay.

Now the lower case super-scripted (b) is placed directly after all other letters

from A to G on the piano when written to make them flat keys as follows.

Ex: Ab, Bb, Cb, etc. thru to G.

So when you start on the letter A, in order to make it flat when writing it, you place the lower case super-scripted (b) just after the letter A and you'll get the capital (A) followed by the lower case super-scripted (b).

So A flat would look like this: Ab

What is a flat?

Technically, a Flat represents an incremental half step from one note to the next which we call an interval, that moves to the left of any note on a piano (keyboard)

Moving to the left is to say moving down the keyboard.

Starting on any letter on the keyboard such as the letter A or B or G etc..., when moving to the left one half step interval, is to move to the very next keynote without skipping or jumping over any other note is how we FLAT that letter or keynote. In most cases it will be a black keynote which we will call A flat (Ab),

B flat (Bb), or even E flat (Eb).

Typically, Flats are the black keys on the piano (keyboard)

Their function represent an incremental half step from one note to the next.

In the key or scale of C Major there are "NO" black, flats.

But in the key of Cb ALL letters have the lower case super-scripted (b) added to them when written:

Compare the C Major scale to the Cb Major scale looks like this:

C Major Scale: C D E F G A B C

Cb Major Scale: Cb Db Eb Fb Gb Ab Bb Cb

1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8v ( the eighth letter in a major scale is called the Octave and is always the same as the first letter you started with. The (v) after the number 8 represents the word Octave 8v.)

There are 7 flats in the key of C Flat (Cb).

Because the eighth note or letter is the same as the first letter in the scale we do not count it twice. Therefore (Cb) in the beginning and (Cb) at the end are considered one flat.

There are NO flats in the key of C.

Now, C Flat (Cb) poses a unique problem because it is not a Black keynote but it is still incrementally a half step interval downward from the letter C which makes it something we call Inharmonic Spelling.

In such a case because (Cb) is incrementally a half step interval downward to the left from the letter C you will notice that, that particular note is not a Black Key at all but in fact a white key which in fact is the letter B. So (Cb) has two names as follows:

(Cb) is in-harmonically the same as letter B

B and (Cb) are the exact same note on your piano (keyboard)
