Just a few early ('82-'83) made in Kalamazoo, perhaps 9 -13, with 4 knobs, to promote Gibson's "Made in USA, World played" ads. Shortly after the interest in them prompted Gibson to do a few more in Nashville (3 knob I believe) AND in Japan with Epiphone brand. There was a fairly recent run as well. The highly prized versions are the first few (of course!).

They are guitars made by Gibson/Baldwin. They are inexpensive models produced primarily for music students.
Epiphone was a company all it's own at one time, owned by a luthier, and named after is son, "Epi." As Epiphone made quality instruments, Gibson purchased the rights to the name, at which point Gibson became responsible for the construction of Epiphone guitars. But, Epiphone makes Epiphone guitars, not Gibson. Gibson is only responsible for providing the materials and the construction regulations. Some would even choose an Epiphone over a Gibson.
