(This is just an educated hypothesis, but...) I think the temporary contract they enter with the other artists involved in the song(s) details the cut of each party involved. I figure it's split by how much of a contribution each artist makes to a song, you know? Here, let's use an example...

B.o.B. feat. Hayley Williams - "Airplanes"

B.o.B. is the main contributor to the song, and does the heavy lifting as far as the vocal tracks (sings the verses and parts of the chorus) and supplies the music itself, whereas Hayley only really does the chorus of the song. Since she does less, she would likely receive less of a commission from the song. I think a fair contract of the proceeds would be 70% B.o.B. and 30% Hayley (plus or minus 5-10%)
