The trumpet and cornet are almost identical in sound; the only difference is the amount of space the two instruments take up. The tube of the cornet is much more scrunched together, and therefore the air creates a lot more friction throughout the twists and turns. The trumpet, however, has longer stretches of metal, allowing the air to take a much more smooth route through the instrument and therefore sounding more full.

A trumpet is longer than a cornet and the mouthpieces are a little different on the end that goes into the instrument. A cornet's is smaller around and shorter. They sound pretty much the same and you can play trumpet music on a cornet, and vise versa. Some older music will have trumpet and cornet music, but it doesn't matter which the music is played on.

I think the first musical instrument in the world would be the mouth, it's capable of all sorts of sounds, however if you mean an actual object used to generate a musical sound it becomes much more difficult, i think a stick hitting another stick or stone to make a repetitive sound would be a contender.
