Not who but what is a Dulcimer. There are 2 types. A mountain dulcimer can be traced way back in history. There are similar dulcimer like instrument in many different countries with different names. These are played on your lap usually. They usually have 3 to 6 strings with a fretboard similar to a guitar.
There is also a trapaziod shaped instrument made of wood with courses of strings in pairs from side to side with pins along the sides to hold the strings. The strings can be tuned with a tuning wrench on one side of the instrument. They can be octave tuned of 5th tuned. There is a treble bridge not quite centered down the instrument, and another to the right about 3" or so from the edge where the pins are. That one is the bass bridge. Every 4th course is marked. Most hammered dulcimers have atleast 12 courses on the treble bridge and 11 on the base and go up from there. There is 2 1/2 octaves on a 12/11 and more depending on the size.
The notes are played just off the bass bridge, then to the right and left of the treble bridge. The 12/11 goes from G3 at the bottom of the bass to a D6 at the top of the left side of the treble bridge. The notes are played with 2 wooden hammers tht you hold in your right & left hand and strike the strings. It has been called a Lumberjack Piano and is kind of like a zither or cymbalm.
