How often do you see male flute or piccolo players in a marching band?

it's not a big craze for guys, but there is one guy picc in our marching band section. (fyi, he's made a lot of friends with the rest of the girls in the section and there are lots of us. I'm not a friend of his but i do know him) it's a good oppurtunity tho to try and play in a popular instrument section and it was used not that very often.

It is far too often that Beethoven is credited with being the first to include the piccolo in a symphony (Beethoven's Fifth 1807-8), because there were several composers including Michael Haydn, Hoffmeister and Sussmayr who did so well before the year 1800! .

What are the similarities between flutes and piccolos?
They are both concert C instruments. This means that if you play an F on the piano, playing an F on the flute will sound the same. The same thing goes for any other pitch you could play. In contrast, a concert B-flat trumpet is shorter than the flute (which makes the pitch higher). To compensate, a trumpet player must play the next half step down to sound the same as the flute. So when a flute plays a concert C pitch, the trumpet would have to play his or her B-flat pitch for it to sound the same (essentially compensating for the different lengths of the instruments). If the trumpet player were to play a concert C at the same as the piano or flute, it would be a half step too high and would be very dissonant.
