Switchfoot named their band after the Surfing trick of riding switchfoot- which is where you ride a wave standing backwards on your board. They gave themselves this name because they wanted to be different then other Christian bands. They didn't want to write four chord worship songs with throw-away lyrics. They wanted to dig deeper, ask questions, and make people think.
