Lighthouses vary in height, but are positioned so that they can be seen above large storm waves. Sometimes the lighthouse does not need to be tall itself because it is on a prominent piece of high land.

The first stone lighthouse was built at Eddystone Rocks off the coast of Devon in the UK and was 18m tall, and was on a rock that was only a little above the high water level. It was replaced after erosion undermined it by a 49m high lighthouse that is still in service.
