It was written by Francis Scot Key as he stood on an American ship watching the British shell Ft. Mc Henry in the war of 1812. When the morning light came he saw that the flag was still flying despite the shelling. The flag today can be seen in the Smithsonian Institute.

it means that all the wars America has fought and having it's flag burned,America still stands tall

However, apart from its meaning, it was written by Francis Scott Key as a poem ("The Defence (sic in title) of Fort Henry") during the War of 1812. Although Key was sympathetic to America, he was a physician, not a soldier, and was hired by the British (in a show of inexplicable hypocracy; obviously putting life over loyalty). The poem details his struggle to see "by the dawn's early light, what proudly we hailed (the flag)" of America, as the American flag over the harbor that the Brits were bombarding at the time meant that the British bombardment was not successful. The poem, with its subtle patriotism and undying hope for America's success, was well-received in America, and became our national anthem after it was set to an old English drinking song.
