1. Decide what you want your robot to do.

2. Make an initial design on paper.

3. Break down the design into components based on their functionality.

4. Make an initial design of the components on paper.

5. Break down the component design into smaller components, based on functionality.

6. Make an initial design of THOSE components.

7. Continue breaking down the components into smaller and smaller components until each piece is planned.

8. Make a final design of each individual piece, calculating functionality, range of motion in angles, stresses in ft/lbs of loading and in torque, velocities both linear and angular, energy consumption, weight, and any other relevant information that will be necessary in the construction of your robot.

But the most important part is knowing what you want the robot to do. You design it, you plan how to build it and you implement it.
