This is an interesting question because it's not something that I've personally had to do. So, my answer is going to come from a combination of manuals that I own and some looking online, which you can also do.
Seems that to remove the handle itself (different than removing the shift lever, which is the shaft that goes into the boot and connects to cables that go to the transmission etc) all you have to do is grab that sucker and give a sharp yank up.
I think I'd give a few tentative yanks and then, if it didnt come off, go back for further research. Sharp yanks are a good way to break plastic things but then, it may be designed to be treated this way.
Wish I could be of more assistance and I'm sure that my fellow Grand Cherokee friends will be appalled at this answer but its the best I can do with what I have.....the more I read, the dirtier my hands get when under the truck, the more I know.......and the better I can be at answering. Let us know how it turns out and perhaps someone smarter than I will come along with a better answer.
