The way I was taught by my father (a music teacher) was to have the tone in my mind prior to when I needed it. This could sometimes be up to ten minutes ahead, so obviously it took some practice.
The technique is part of learning 'relative pitch' - given one pitch can you find the interval below or above it at, say, a third, fourth, or fifth? So, if the pitch is given for The Sopranos, can you find the starting pitch for the bass line. That practice carries over into being able to hold onto that 'key' pitch through an acapella section when you KNOW that the orchestra coming in at the end of it WILL be in pitch - as a reference, the hymn at the beginning of the 1812 Overture.

Singing isn't hard but singing well is. There are very few people in this world who are truly tone-deaf, and those who aren't are generally able to sing passably in a group. However singing well on one's own requires discipline and a bit of talent. I hear people say "anyone can sing" I believe so but being a singer myself i think anyone can sing but its a matter of being good.
You probably are out of tune. Spend some time playing the notes on the piano and trying to match them.

One of the biggest causes of a person having trouble singing is inability to match voice tone to the music tone. A person suffering from this is commonly referred to as being "tone-deaf." What's a quick fix? Try putting a finger in your ear to block out the outside noise in that ear. This makes it easier to concentrate on adjusting your vocal tone to match the musical tone.
