Brian Jones (guitar) placed an add to start a band in 1962. Ian Stewart (piano) answered.
Mick Jagger (vocal), Keith Richards (guitar), and Dick Taylor (bass) were already playing on their own together in amateur band but joined up with them instead. The resulting group called themselves The Rolling Stones.
After Dick Taylor left, they played with a couple different bassists and drummers before completing the line-up with Bill Wyman (bass) and Charlie Watt (drums) in early 1963. In mid-June 1963, Ian Stewart was demoted from band member to road manager. He still played with the band (for another 20 years) but not as an official member.
