For ages people have been blowing into hollowed out sticks, lengths of bamboo, etc. These instruments evolved with the cultures that bore them. People added holes, repositioned holes, added keys and experimented with material, shape and size. In the mid-1800's Theobald Boehm made some of the most significant acoustical achievements in the instrument's history; his instrument is the basis for those played in orchestras, etc, today.
