1. Make a recording of the song and burn it to CD. This can be as simple as you singing while playing the chords on guitar and piano. You don't need a full recording of the song as the song itself consists of melody, chords and lyrics and any key riffs or hooks - anything else is just extras to add to the arrangement.

2. Write down the lyrics.

3. Put the CD and lyrics in an envelope and send it back to yourself by recorded delivery mail.

4. When it arrives DO NOT OPEN IT! The fact that you had to sign for it means there is a record of when it was delivered. This proves when you copyrighted the song. If you open the envelope you could technically have added the CD/lyrics after the date of delivery and so it voids the whole idea of it.

It's as simple as that! So won't cost too much. You are actually protected by copyright the moment you write something but you have to have a way of proving it's yours and when you wrote it. This is how to do that.

If you copyright 10 songs as a collection are they all protected individually - if not why is that bad?

No. That's the downside to getting the collective copyright. Example: If John Doe has a collective copyright on his album John Doe Sings the Blues and Track 2 on the album "Anonymous Blues" is licensed, all the other tracks on the album are licensed with "Anonymous Blues". Answer 2 Presumably you wrote them then the answer is - Yes. If you only recorded them and published said recording with permission, then you hold copyright in said recording only. Copyright protection is an automatic right under international law, but evidence may be required to support your claim in the event of a dispute, so ensure copyright protection for your work by using a copyright registration service. The automatic copyright in the sound recording will run for 50 years from the year of recording, or 50 years from date of release if released in that time. Actual duration may vary slightly from one country to another depending on national laws.
