Generally the entire instrument, the string(s) is plucked or struck and so it starts vibrating. The string is in mechanical contact with the rest of the instrument and transfers the vibrations of the string(s) well; this means the body of the instrument is now vibrating. The body of a stringed instrument is, in general, made to resonate the sound so that an audience can hear music played on the instrument.

In short, -every part- of the instrument vibrates. The string is used to start the vibrations and the body projects the sound when the vibrations are transferred to it.
