I believe it is about two women. Mainly because of the lines, after his talking in the middle of the song, "... but this is what I told my friend, you know sometimes, you get lonely, you get lonely, you get lonely, and I cried. I cried. Oh... the song builds to "and then I met you darling, and you smiled at me, oh it was such a pretty smile, yes it was. And then you reached out your hand. You helped me..."
The way I interpret the song is, he's talking to the woman who helped him from the very beginning get over his broken heart. He finally drops his guard and lays it all out there.
"Girl you know I love you, no matter what you do. And I hope you understand me, every word I say is true, cause I love."
Speculation: His girlfriend may have had doubts in their relationship but this song is to finally put the rest how he truly feels about his current girlfriend and let her know, he's completely over the other girl. It's like he's putting all his cards on the table, "but I want only you girl, if it's in God's will, cause I love you."
