Rock musicians moved away from the pop format and big band swing type era music that was typical before World War 2.

They combined r&b and country to form what is now known as rock n roll. Beat poets took off the wall subjects and bongo drums to express their poetry other than the typical form that had existed for centuries. They later became known as beatniks, fore runner of the hippies. Both were similar that they were both outcasts from typical conventions and styles. However rock n roll musicians of the 50`s were more in line with the mainstream world at that time other than their music. They still dressed nice and were clean cut.The beat poets on the other hand had a more anything goes attitude and some grew beards and kept quite unkempt appearances.
