They group was popular in their own country (Sweden) almost from the very first. Then later they became known in northern European countries. After 1974 though, and their win at the Eurovision Song Contest that year their fame grew by leaps and bounds all over the world. The mid to late 1970's was the peak of their popularity.

The first recording by the group that would become known as "Abba" was released in June, 1972. However, Abba's songwriters, guitarist Bjorn Ulvaeus and keyboardist Benny Andersson, first met in 1966 and began writing and performing together. They both met their future wives, vocalists Agnetha Faltskog and Frida Lyngstad in 1969, and the women started singing back-up on Bjorn and Benny performances. The four started performing together as a group in 1970.
