You're asking for a matter of opinion, and mine is no. For one, which feats of actual heroism has he accomplished? The word "hero" is ridiculously overused these days, it dulls down those who have actually done something heroic. James Hetfield, for example, never ran into a burning building to save a child. I know people who have, and continue to go unnoticed. The man's an egomaniac, on top of it, which certainly is in no way heroic. Topping that off, you have the matter of Metallica - a band which was once great (prior to 1990), but whose fame caused them to be credited for things they're not due credit for. For example, they're not the first American band to play Metal - Pentagram and Cirith Ungol were at it long before them. They didn't create Thrash Metal - Venom beat them to it, and, additionally, out of the "Big Four", Slayer were the only ones who ever really played true-to-form Thrash. Then, you have the eponymous Kill 'Em All album - problem is, that release was made on the backs of bands which came before them - almost every riff in that album was "borrowed" from Angel Witch, Savage, Blitzkrieg, and Diamond Head.

A major figure in the Metal scene? Yes, that he was (and I suppose still is). But a hero? Absolutely not.
