In 1987 Guitarist Layne Stanley met Cantrell at a party, and asked him to stay at the Music Bank Hotel, eventually Cantrell asked Layne to join him in the band Diamond Lie, who had also a bassist by the name of Mike Starr, and drummer Sean Kinney who was dating Mike's sister at the time.
No, never, but Metallica likes Jerry Cantrell
Since Alice in Chains inception in 1987 there have only been six members to be in the band; Jerry Cantrell, William DuVall, Mike Inez, Sean Kinney, Layne Staley, and Mike Starr. This is current bands lineup excluding Staley and Starr, and as of right now there are two singers in the band; Cantrell and DuVall. DuVall was introduced into the group as their lead singer after the original lead singer and co-founder, Layne Staley, died in 2002 from overdosing on a speedball (mixture of heroin and cocaine). Cantrell, the other founder, also sings in some songs. Kenney and Inez are only the drummer and bassist respectively and don't sing. Starr was the original bassist and left the band in 1993, he also didn't sing.
