Yes, he was. Some of the songs he sang with the Beatles were Help, You've Got to Hide Your Love Away, I'm a Loser, Revolution, and others. Go on YouTube or another site to see one of the songs they played live.

He was in his own band called the Quarrymen. They didn't last long though, and when John met Paul in 1957, almost immediately the silver beetles were formed. Which went from the silver beetles to the silver beatles to the Beatles. And they never changed.
