The evening of his death Michael Jackson experienced what has been described as agitation for which his physician administered large and repeated doses of conventional depressants, none of which generally cause respiratory depression. When this type of of unusual agitation is seen doctors are trained to look for metabolic derangements such as low or high sugars, electrolyte abnormalities, low oxygen or high CO2's to explain them. This was not done. Instead, when the other drugs failed his doctor administered propofol, a general anesthetic which is generally only used in controlled hospital settings by trained and equipped personnel. Michael Jackson's death certificate lists Propofol intoxication as the primary cause of death but also describes inflammation and hemorrhages in the lungs. The underlying lung disease probably caused the agitation which lead to medication being given and left him more prone to the respiratory depressant (i.e fatal) effects of the Propofol.</i>
