Yes, they are. In the liner notes of the original Cd release of Machine Head, which was originally issued in 1972, Deep Purple are credited with giving birth to heavy metal after the release of the Machine Head album.
Two schools of thought here. Some say Deep Purple are metal, but most people say that they are a very heavy rock band with some metal tracks. I agree with the latter.
Deep Purple
When the f**k do you think they started?! 1864!
Deep Purple ended in 1976.
The song "Deep Purple Hush" was recorded by Deep Purple in 1968 for their first album "Shades of Deep Purple". It was based on the song "Hush" by Billy Joe Royal in November 1967.

The Band 'Deep Purple'. And, Buckcherry does the 2009 cover. :) Blackfoot is the band that performs Highway Song, not Deep Purple unless they did a cover version at some point
No particular person started heavy metal, rather, certain bands inspired it. Heavy metal evolved from blues rock and psychedelic rock. Bands like Led Zeppelin, Cream, and Deep Purple laid down the groundwork for heavy metal, however, they themselves are not heavy metal. The first band to be considered heavy metal even today is Black Sabbath, who released their first album in 1970.
