Not technically. Technically speaking, both versions - film and stage - are not classical operas, they're musicals. (And even the literature/promotional materials refer to it as such, actually-) Traditionally, operas have little or no spoken words - all of the dialogue is sung. Musicals have numbers that represent conversations, advance the plotline, or serve some other major purpose... but they also contain "normal" theatrical spoken dialogue. It's close, though. The spoken dialogue really is at a minimum... but then again, music IS the soul of the entire plot, more or less, which makes it much easier to fuse the two.

Phantom of the Opera is written by Gaston Leroux. The Phantom could be a real man who lived under the Paris Opera House. It was noted back in 1800s' the people with physical deformed handicap lived underground of the Paris Opera House. Gaston Leroux was an opera reporter and an investigator of strange incidents at the opera house.

Andrew Lloyd Webber's Phantom of the Opera is pure fiction based on Gaston Leroux's Phantom of the Opera both stage and movie's version.

if you read the prologue of the book it says that he was real. Plus the story actually could be true!

The book is based on old stories of phantom and also facts of a letter requesting money and when the money was given for collection it disappeared also when the opera house was sold many weird things were found deep in the bowels of the house like a mirrored room with a metal hanging tree, many concealed doors and a finished opera which may have been called Don Juan which had never been performed. A white mask was also found.

a few of these 'torture chambers' had been set up around the world but the genius who created them was always kicked out and sent away. Also one of the few people who had seen communicated and concealed the 'Phantom' was visited by him as the phantom was dying.

There was mysterious disappearence of the Viscount de chagny and Christine daae a soprano at the opera house.

Yes the Phantom of the Opera is realistic. If you had a scared face, and it could not be fix by surgery, you would want to hide too. Of course fall in love with a sixteen year old girl who is twenty years your junior and have her convinced that you are an angel of music and her boyfriend is a slave to fashion.

Where the Phantom of the Opera is truly realistic, in France in 1890s' people live to underground in Paris. It was common to hide their physical scars from the world, living underground was the only solution. The creator Phantom of the Opera is Gaston Leroux, he worked as a French Journalist and reporter of Paris Opera, he could have meet these people who lived underground which he based his character Erik his Phantom upon.
