No, it's not a drug song. That's a myth.
The song Puff the Magic Dragon really talks about a Magic Dragon that lives down under inside a cave alongside the ocean. It really isn't about drugs.
Supposedly this was a song though it was turned into a children's song had a secret meaning of being about smoking marijuana. Example: magic (drag-in) Little Jacky (paper) for rolling joints etc.
It's not really Bob Dylan's style, is it? 'Puff..." originated in a poem written by a college student named Leonard Lipton around 1962. He gave the poem to his friend, folk singer Peter Yarrow, who put it to music, adding some additional lyrics. So the answer is: No, Bob Dylan is not responsible. The song was written by Leonard Lipton and Peter Yarrow.
I do remember hearing Peter Paul and Mary do Puff the Magic Dragon on the Captain Kangaroo show. The thing is, I remember hearing it multiple times when I lived in San Diego. I moved from San Diego in 1962, and PPM didn't release the song until 1963. I was trying to reconcile this, which is how I stumbled across this thread. I don't remember seeing them perform, but, as I remember, there were drawings which went with the song.

They bring magic into the world. No dragon's, no magic, no miracles.
Okay There are rumors that the whole thing is a puff for the life story(horribly distorted-this person is still very much alive) of a popular Lead singer of a female rock group, Jackie Paper is a buzz word for -well he has been recently involved in a murder trial, yOu know) There were implications that The person identified with(Puff) was at least partially an android and while immune from normal aging, had certain (identity crisis) problems. A similar and more plausible Urban legend has it the Chipmunks are a satire on the same group and it works on letters to words: Observe the following.Veronica-Theodore -Estel-Simon- Nedra- Alvin Dave Seville- Phil Spector all are in one-to-one correspondence! a Helluva coincidence, huh. Dey Do Ron Ron!
no sorry they were talking about him imagining it and passing the dream on to his kids or whatever. Or maybe he didn't believe anyway someone else fond him as it said in the song make way for other toys. oh and it's 'magic' not majic :)
This has been argued, but given the juvenile tone of the song, does not seem very likely. It has also been theorized that Puff is a satire on Big-Bore Ronnie Spector, h"mm Ronnie kept a lookout perched on Philip"s garbage pail! how"s that. Odd conning tower.
