Nobody knows the answer to this question, simply because the song was not written by Roger Whittaker.

Although often referred to as his career song, "The Last Farewell" was actually written by Ron Webster, a silversmith in Birmingham, England.

While many have tried to attribute some romantic connection between the song and Mr. Whittaker, none exists.
