Contrary to popular belief, The Agony Scene did start out as a "Christian band." Original vocalist and lyricist Rod Burguiere along with the other members held strong religious beliefs that can be easily seen in the band's early lyrics. As time progressed and he began to question the validity of the Christian faith, Burguiere's writing style became much darker and shifted away from the heavy religious themes he had previously written about. By this time most other Agony Scene members were also in a religious quagmire. When Burguiere left the band in August of 2002, The Agony Scene completely severed its ties with organized religion. As to why the band publicly denied having ever been "Christian" is anyone's guess.
