There have been four other members in Metallica prior to the present day (2013). Ron McGovney who was replaced by Cliff Burton. After Cliff's death, he was replaced by Jason Newstead. They are no longer members of Metallica. In addition Dave Mustaine was with Metallica until 1983 - he was replaced by Kirk Hammet who remains with Metallica.
Dave lars and James were friends when Metallica first started. They asked him to join. Then in 1982 he was Kicke dout and Kirk hammet has played guitar for Metallica ever since.

I am not sure if you can play as Dave Mustain (Metallica's first Guitarist currently in the band Megadeath), Cliff Burton (Metallica's original bassist, who died in a tour bus accident), or Jason Newstead (Metallica's bassist from Cliff's death to the Reload album.)
