The musical instrument isn't that popular compared to the violin. In most places musicians start of by playing the violin and then learn the viola afterwards. Violas don't often get the tune in orchestral pieces and therefore many people choose the violin over it. However the viola is becoming more popular and composers are starting to use it more often due to its deep, rich tone.
