Yes, in referring to stringed instruments "double bass" is just another way to say "upright bass".
However, the phrase "double bass" is also frequently used by percussionists to refer to a drum set which has two kick drums.
No. Not at all. Upright basses are much bigger. An upright bass is as tall as an average full-grown person while a cello is as tall as a small child. Cellos can also fit between the legs of the player very well while basses are much wider.
A Double Bass is bigger. A double bass is played standing up, whereas a cello is played sitting down.

no. A bass is larger than a cello, and the viola de gamba is bigger than the cello but smaller than the bass.
Yes. This is an instrument with many names. Double bass, upright bass, contrabass, acoustic bass, string bass, big bass, bass fiddle, as well as just bass.
No,the other way round
The only strings instruments that are larger in size than the cello are the double bass and the harp.
A violin is a much higher pitched instrument than the Cello. Also, the violin is played while supporting it with your neck and shoulder while the Cello is played upright, similar to a bass.
The name for a large cello is a 4/4 cello or a full size.

It depends on what cello you mean. Dimensions of cellos tend to vary from instrument to instrument. It also depends on what size the cello is, and what maker it has. I know, for instance, that my cello is a lot wider than other cellos classified in the same size.
Truthfully I would say that bass is the best instrument. That is if you are looking for a challenge. It is a very large instrument with a large range of notes that can range from a low E (or B if you have a extension or five string bass) to a high G or D. If you want a beautiful instrument you can play cello or violin. But unless you are amazing at either of those instruments you are not going to get very far. There is much less competition if you play bass. This is a completely biased opinion. I hope your instrument searching goes well!
same size, upright, and same distance
The Cello's dimensions vary with size of cello compared to the person.
Based on your height, you should play a three-fourth size cello. I know this because I am an inch taller and I play the cello.
