The Baritone Oboe is the largest in the oboe family. Though if you mean in the double reed family it's the contrabasson. An oboist couldn't play the contrabassoon, but he could play the baritone oboe. It's 1 octave lower than the oboe.

The instrument you most likely are referring to is the English Horn. The English Horn is longer and larger than the oboe. It creates a similar sound but deeper and is able to go to lower octaves. Like the oboe, it uses a double reed but utilizes a bocal, which can be seen on a bassoon as well. The English Horn reed is shorter and wider than a regular oboe reed. The bottom of an English Horn differs from that of an oboe because it has a bell that is round. These distinct differences manipulate the sound to create a different timbre.
