Where is the moment we needed the most You kick up the leaves and the magic is lost You tell me your blue skies fade to grey You tell me your passion's gone away And I don't need no carryin' on You stand in the line just to hit a new low You're faking a smile with the coffee to go You tell me your life's been way off line You're falling to pieces everytime And I don't need no carryin' on Because you had a bad day You're taking one down You sing a sad song just to turn it around You say you don't know You tell me don't lie You work at a smile and you go for a ride You had a bad day The camera don't lie You're coming back down and you really don't mind You had a bad day You had a bad day Well, you need a blue sky holiday The point is they laugh at what you say And I don't need no carryin' on You had a bad day You're taking one down You sing a sad song just to turn it around You say you don't know You tell me don't lie You work at a smile and you go for a ride You had a bad day The camera don't lie You're coming back down and you really don't mind You had a bad day (Oh.. Holiday..) Sometimes the system goes on the blink And the whole thing turns out wrong You might not make it back and you know That you could be well oh that strong And I'm not wrong (ahhh...) So where is the passion when you need it the most Oh, you and I You kick up the leaves and the magic is lost 'Cause you had a bad day You're taking one down You sing a sad song just to turn it around You say you don't know You tell me don't lie You work at a smile and you go for a ride You had a bad day You've seen what you like And how does it feel for one more time You had a bad day You had a bad day (Oh, yeah, yeaaah, yeah) Had a bad day (Oh, had a bad day) Had a bad day (Oh, yeah, yeah, yeeeeah) Had a bad day (Oh, had a bad day) Had a bad day... Had a bad day...

Music Videos are essentially up to anyone's interpretation, so this is just strictly my own opinion (not sure if everyone else thinks the same):

Whether it be caused by work, the people or the environment around you, everyone goes through a bad day. As Daniel Powter indicates in his song, one bad day can just make you have such a negative outlook on life where you would practically just want to give up. You would think to yourself that no one could possibly help or even understand what you're going through, so why bother to let them know?

Despite the fact that these two people shown in the music video have similar traits - from their living conditions, methods of transportation, and their office jobs - they are essentially just random strangers. But the one thing they greatly have in common is the fact that they are just having a bad day (or week).
As each individual goes about their days, they assume that there is nothing out there to turn their day around. They remain unfazed by the many things around them that could potentially turn their day around: From coworkers having a good laugh amongst one another, couples spending time with each other, and even a poster (seen behind them where they are waiting for their subway) that says, 'SMILE.' A lot of people who are often depressed would look at these things and possibly think to themselves how stupid these 'happy' things are. Each individual merely wants to continue staying in their depressed states, as shown by both of their desires to eat alone as well as the woman's drawings after arguing with her boss. As each individual looks at one another's state from afar in their respective work spaces, it can possibly be inferred that they each think to themselves, 'Damn... my life sucks.'

The board in the subway station near the end portrays a very good scene with a strong message, however:Just 'cause you had a bad day, you're taking one (or perhaps, others around you) down,' as seen by the woman bringing a gloomy setting to this "ray of sunshine" board. But deep down, we all show pity for those going through a bad day. As the man passes by the now depressing-like board, he - despite having gone through a bad day (or more) himself - decides to change things up a bit and bring a little 'SHINE' to this bleak board. As each individual goes back and forth with their drawings throughout the week with the woman drawing negative scenarios and the man drawing positive illustrations (Hell, his marker is orange: Isn't that a pretty upbeat color? Hahaha) the woman finally comes to terms with the idea that we ought to look at the brighter side of things in life. As bad as our days may seem, they can't last forever.

The music video ends on a positive note, however, despite the song's indication that nothing could turn around a bad day. His music video leaves behind a message that (in my opinion) goes along the lines of this: We all have our bad days (Cue the woman in the rain scene), but that doesn't mean that we ought to let others have a bad day as well (cue the man putting an umbrella over the woman)... right?

(On an ironic note: The woman is the one who drew the cloud of rain and hey: she ended up standing in the pouring rain herself while the man who was the one who drew the umbrella ended up being the one who provided an umbrella for her.)

I hoped all of that helped... have a GREAT day! :)
