In 1965 the prominent American pro-LSD campaigner Timothy Leary announced that he would run for the Governorship of California, under the slogan 'Come together, join the party'. John Lennon was both a longstanding friend and admirer of Timothy Leary, and deeply distrustful of the official Republican candidate (a former actor called Ronald Regan).
Lennon wrote Come Together as a hustings song for the Leary campaign.
Sadly, Regan won.
