In the 1970s when Dire Straits were in dire straits one of the band had a flat on a housing estate in Deptford in London. (just across the way from Vic Reeves before he became famous, he told me part of this story). Near where they lived there was a pub 'The Prince of Orange' famous for Jazz and it was of course 'South Of The River' and 'Downsouth London Town'. The song is about a band but I do not know who.

Let us not forget that their song Single Handed Sailor talks about the Gypsy Moth 'all tied down'. This a reference to another geographically close object to their flat. The Gypsy Moth was in Greenwich.
