He played his 5 string on Lock and Key. Period. I cannot remember where but I read in an interview with Geddy that Lock and Key was the 1 time he has used a 5 string. Counterparts was the jazz run through his Wal D.I setup into an old ampeg amp from the 70's that he used for his rick around fly by night era. He did disguise his jazz as a wal fairly well on that album though. Thus causing ALOT of confusion
The other person who answered this is correct: circa 1987, Geddy Lee did play a 5-string bass for "Lock and Key," from the album "Hold Your Fire."

I believe Amos Heller plays his 5-string upright on this song. You can play any song with a 4 or 5 string bass, but it might not sound right. The main verse is played C - F - Am - F which would sound best on a 5-string with the low C on the B string. Playing the C on the A string might not sound right, but it's worth a try. You could fake it on a 4 string by tuning your low E down to C which would put the F on the 5th fret/position. I've done it before I got my 5-string.
The entire run is played on the low "e" string, which is the thickest string. There are typically 22 frets on the neck and you count starting at the head. So on the "e" string you play the song by holding the frets in this order. 5-5-7-5-3-1-0 (zero being striking the string without holding any fret)
You can play any song without a D string. It won't sound right but it can be done........
By default, a bass is tuned to E-A-D-G from low to high; but there are other factors that can alter this such as the bass having more strings(typically a 5-String would have a low B before the E, and a six would have the B as well as a high C above the G) but they can be tuned to any number of tunings the same way a guitar(or any stringed instrument for that matter) can to suit the rest of the song / composition or to make something easier to play.

You can look at Chord Conversion Sheets to determine what notes to play on the bass for that song because there is only sheet music for that song.

It changes depending on who is playing it, some bassists just play very simple bass lines along with the guitarists, unfortuantly the sound of guitars is alot louder than a bass, bass guitars create atmosphere at live concerts primarily as the notes they play create vibrations that go through the audience giving the room a better feel. With bassists such as flea from the red hot chili peppers or geddy lee from rush are more creative when it comes to song writing and mostly have the main role in a song, check out the song Around The World by RHCP, the opening is flea with a crazy effect on his bass guitar.
It really depends on which xanado song you mean. There's the Olivia Newton John song, the Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky, Mick & Tich song and, most recently, the one written by prog-rock trio Rush. the singer on that song is Geddy Lee, he also plays bass and sythesizers on the song.
The last song the string quartet plays is called "Nearer, My God, to Thee".
He played bass.
acoustic guitar, drums partly with brush sticks to my recolection, bass guitar, string, and piano
