Is there a national anthem etiquette?

In 2007, Congress addressed this for the first time in 36 USC 301. This U.S. Code therefore created the first mandated national anthem etiquette. The pledge of allegiance should be rendered by standing at attention, facing the flag, and placing the right hand over the heart (the salute). Uniformed personnel, firefighters, law enforcement officers, and military personnel in uniform should render a hand salute. When the national anthem is played or sung, U.S. citizens should stand straight and rigid and salute at the first note and hold the salute through the last note. The salute is directed to the flag, if displayed, otherwise to the singer.

What is the etiquette for reciting both the American National Anthem and the anthem of another country?

All able-bodied attendees should stand during the recital, and face the flag if one is visible, or face the music if the flag is not visible. When one's own nation's anthem is being played or sung, one would render the appropriate salute or gesture, if one is prescribed, and members of other nations in attendance would stand at attention in respectful silence. In the case of sporting events or other multinational cultural affairs, the host nation's anthem would be played or sung first, and the guest nation(s)'s anthem(s) after the host's. Exceptions and variations are numerous. If in doubt, contacting the Department (or Ministry) of State's office of protocol, or similar department, may be helpful.

If you are an American, during the playing of the National Anthem, you should stand, face the flag, and place your right hand over your heart. Can a non veteran render a hand salute?

The hand salute is a sign of respect given with the right hand to show no weapon held against the one you are saluting. As such, it could be rendered by anyone, military or not, as a sign of respect. When standing for the passing of the colors or the playing of the National Anthem, however, one's right hand should rest upon the area of the heart as a similar tribute. Recently, the U.S. Congress passed a law allowing veterans to render a salute for the national anthem or passing of colors rather than hand-over-heart at their option.

Do women have to remove their hat for the playing of the national anthem?

The protocol is for everyone to remove their hat when their national anthem is played, or when you another country's anthem is played. Some exceptions apply - for example, a Sikh's turban or a Muslim's head scarf will likely be left on.For men, a hat should be removed when you meet a lady and then left off for the rest of your life - nothing looks more ridiculous than a hat.U.S.CodeTITLE 36 > Subtitle I > Part A > CHAPTER 3 > § 301Prev | Next§ 301.
