Good question. Shaw made 'Begin the Beguine' in 1938 and then went into seclusion, supposedly because he was not able to handle the publicity that went along with making a hit record. He recorded a song called 'Frenesi' in 1940 that was pretty popular. But as far as 1939 is concerned, I don't know of any hits he made. I just found it! Answer is "They Say." 'They Say' by Artie Shaw'They Say' was recorded in 1938-1939 in New York City and Boston for a radio broadcast. Artie Shaw played Clarinet while Helen Forest and Tony Pastor sang vocals.
