Compared with Bach or Beethoven the answer is probably no. Bach was technically a genius who took the baroque fugue, choral music, keyboard music (harpsichord and organ), chamber music and so on to a new level far above what had gone before. As far as counterpoint, fugal styles and harmony are concerned so composer came even close before or since. Beethoven also was a musical genius, who produced masterpieces in whatever genre he turned his hand to - symphony, string quartet, concerto, Opera, oratorio, choral music, piano sonatas and so on, and no other composer has had more influence on his successors than Beethoven. However, within his genre - ie that of songwriting and lyric writing, John Lennon will go down in history as certainly one of the 'greats' (along with George Gershwin, Irving Berlin and Cole Porter) and could probably be described as the greatest songwriter of the 20th century as he influenced so many who came after him. So, if you define genius by the amount of influence that someone has coupled with the skill of combining emotion, technicality and musicality in his works then, within the genre of songwriting Lennon could easily be regarded as a musical genius. But outside that narrow field we would have to look at the greats of all time like Beethoven and Bach to experience true, irrefutable genius.
