Yes and no. His father basically abandond John when he was a child and was raised by his aunt Mimi after she contacted the authorities. Aunt Mimis husband George gave John a harmonica and tought him crossword puzzles and how to read. George died in 1955 when John was away on vacation. When John grew older he began to see more of his mother (she tought him banjo) befor she was killed by a drunk off-duty policeman when John was 17.
