You can argue both ways. the entire tone of the song is mournful. all of the action takes place in an unnamed backwater ( hence the Tallahatchee Bridge) as it is pronounced- southern town. the town seems to be culturally backward but does have a ( Picture show) a dialect term for a movie house. the character, while crucial to the song, is not positively identified as either male or female. I can"t help but think it was a Girl, as a Girl- Bobby Gentry sings the song. The title character commited suicide- but not details are given. Choctaw Ridge and the Tallahatchee bridge are, in effect, crime scenes. It is a sad, morbid song that doesn"t even seem to have any redeeming qualities. the grandfather character dies of a virus- which just adds to the graveyard atmosphere.
Unfortunatly, Billie Jean is an imaginary woman.
No, but it is a very downbeat song. My guess the title character may be a woman who takes her own life by jumping off a Bridge. Billie Jo Mcalester jumped off the Tallahatchee ( not Tallahassee, that"s in Florida) bridge. Everything about the song is down-trodden like a nowhere town where nothing intelligent ever happens other than juvenile pranks at a (Picture show)-evidentally a movie house- untill, well something big goes down the pike.
pretty woman hope this helps sian aged 20
A wise observation! It is obvious the way the story line jumps arond- the actual suicide does not occur in the song, it is also not clear whether the title character is a man or a woman, after mature thought, methinks it was a Girl. Song could use a couple of more verses to tie things together, plot wise. There is also an apparent jump in ( totally different type of song) The Little Drummer Boy- which could have used a more plotful versing.
