Instruments similar to the guitar have been popular for at least 4,000 years. Their names all bear a resemblance to ou word "guitar"

The modern guitar is descended from the Roman cithara brought by the Romans to Hispania around 40 CE, and further adapted and developed with the arrival of the four-string oud, brought by the Moors after their conquest of the Iberian peninsula in the 8th century.

The modern classical guitar was first invented in Spain in the 1850s, by the Vinaccia family, who was known for their lutes and mandolins. The word guitar comes from the Spanish word guitarra, which came from the medieval Arabic qitara, which in turn came from Latin cithara, which came from Greek kithara, which came from Ancient Persian sihtara.
