Antonio Vivaldi
Vivaldi wrote literally hundreds of concerti (the Italian plural of concerto). He wrote concerti for solo violin (including the Four Seasons), for cello, for mandolin, for flute, for piccolo, and a number of concerti for combinations of solo instruments.
The symphony as we know it was not yet invented in Vivaldi's time. His name was made almost exclusively on the hundreds of concertos he wrote for various solo instruments, notably the violin, and different combinations of solo instruments. His most famous work, The Four Seasons, is a set of four violin concerti based on four poems depicting the seasons. He also wrote sacred solo vocal and choral music, the most famous of which is his Gloria.
The solo instrument is a violin.
Antonio Vivaldi wrote over 500 concertos, or concerti. Around 350 of his concerti were written for solo instrument and strings, and of these about 230 were composed for the violin. The idea of a solo for one instrument out of a group seems to have been quite foreign to medieval music. In fact, composers usually did not assign parts to specific instruments.
